What does occupational therapy treat?

At Physio Multiservices, our occupational therapists assess the impact of physical health problems (lumbar sprain, shoulder tendinitis, knee surgery, etc.) and/or mental health problems (depression, post-traumatic stress, burnout, etc.) on their patients “function. They also assess their patients” level of autonomy in carrying out activities (work, hygiene, dressing, eating, etc.). The occupational therapist then draws up a treatment plan aimed at improving the patient’s autonomy and/or abilities.

How does an occupational therapy session work?

The occupational therapist will work with the patient to achieve the objectives established with him/her, using functional activities that reproduce everyday life and/or work situations.

Occupational therapists can assess and treat patients who have suffered a work-related accident (CNESST), a road accident (SAAQ), an injury at home or following surgery, etc.

We also offer occupational therapy services for workstation and home assessments.

  • Assessment of functional and work capacities
The functional and work capacity evaluation is highly recommended for paying agents who wish to determine whether their client currently has the optimal functional and work capacity to return to pre-injury employment. This is the most comprehensive and accurate assessment available. A typical assessment includes a history of the injured worker, his or her occupational performance, the requirements of the pre-injury job, the worker’s current capabilities, the obstacles to returning to work, and an analysis of the assessment and its recommendations. The purpose of this assessment is generally to determine whether a functional skills development program can be initiated, or to identify possible alternatives.
  • Assessment of rehabilitation potential
The Rehabilitation Potential Assessment is strongly recommended to the paying agent wishing to determine whether his or her client currently has sufficient capacity to begin a functional capacity development program. It is appreciated by some paying agents, as it can be carried out without a medical prescription, in the absence of a prescription for an assessment of the worker’s functional capabilities. This assessment is also recommended for all beneficiaries who were not actually employed at the time of their accident. The purpose of this assessment is generally to determine whether a functional abilities development program can be started, or to find out about possible alternatives.
  • Development of functional and working skills
The PDCF (Programme de développement de capacités fonctionnelles (et de travail) or PDCFT) is a program offered to workers who have reached a therapeutic plateau in conventional treatments, but who have sufficient rehabilitation potential to start a more intensive program to improve their abilities, particularly their work capabilities. The professionals involved in the PDCF are determined according to the needs of the worker targeted during the assessment of his or her rehabilitation potential or the evaluation of his or her functional capacities prior to this program. Our multidisciplinary team includes an occupational therapist, physiotherapists, a psychologist and a physical rehabilitation therapist using a kinesiology approach. Some conventional treatments, such as acupuncture, osteopathy, massage therapy or chiropractic, can be pursued in conjunction with PDCF.
