Like many people, you probably have questions about physiotherapy.
Here is a summary of answers to frequently asked questions:
Do I need a doctor’s prescription to see a physiotherapist?
No, since the early 90s, you’ve had direct access to physiotherapy services. This means that, following an injury, you can make an appointment directly with a physiotherapist without first going through a doctor. So there’s no need to wait hours in the emergency room for a physiotherapy referral. By doing so, you’re helping to reduce waiting times in the emergency department.
On the other hand, if your injury is the result of an accident at work or on the road, you’ll need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist if you want your treatment to be reimbursed by the CSST or SAAQ.
Can I choose my clinic for physiotherapy care?
Yes, you are always free to choose the clinic that suits you best for your physiotherapy care. Occasionally, you may see a doctor outside your region and be referred to a physiotherapy clinic near his or her office. Your physiotherapy referral is valid everywhere. You can choose the clinic that’s right for you.
Will I be reimbursed by my insurance for physiotherapy treatments I receive at a private clinic?
Yes, the vast majority of insurance companies reimburse physiotherapy services on presentation of a receipt. As each company is different, reimbursement terms vary from one company to another and from one contract to another. Check with your insurance company to find out how you will be reimbursed.
