When tendonitis (shoulder, elbow, Achilles tendon, etc.) does not respond to conventional treatment (anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections, conventional physiotherapy, etc.) and the condition stagnates, there is another physiotherapy alternative: radial shock wave therapy, better known as Shock wave therapy. This approach has proven its effectiveness in the treatment of chronic tendinopathy, as a number of studies have shown.
However, before undertaking this type of treatment, your condition must meet certain criteria and not present any of the recognized contraindications. This is why the physiotherapist in charge will contact you to ask a few questions about your state of health and the reason for your consultation.
Thereafter, if the prerequisites are met, treatment will consist of a minimum of 3 shockwave sessions and a maximum of 6.
Is it painful?
It’s a question we often hear. The treatment itself is uncomfortable and sometimes painful, but as it is short-lived, it is well tolerated. Some patients choose to take an analgesic an hour before their appointment to make it more comfortable.
After treatment…
Studies show that the condition continues to improve in the weeks following the last treatment. In addition, the physiotherapist will provide advice and an exercise program that will optimize the return of functional capacity more quickly.
