The return of spring and physiotherapy

Spring has sprung and the return of fine weather is just around the corner. The warmer weather is bringing new customers to our clinics. Numb from too long a hibernation, they get excited as soon as the first weather forecasts rise above 10 degrees Celsius and get on their bikes, get out rags and mops, trowels and hoes to get busy on the bike paths, at home or in their gardens, full of good intentions.

The resumption of activities left over from our long winter is often the cause of avoidable musculoskeletal pain. In our consultations, we see clients who, after a major clean-up, experience neck and/or shoulder pain and stiffness. Others, who have resumed an activity too intensively, too quickly, have suffered a muscle strain or sprain. These clients are often forced to slow down for the duration of the physiotherapy treatment, so that they can resume their activities a little later… losing a few days, or even a few weeks, of their precious time.

To avoid these inconveniences, we suggest that you resume these activities gradually, measuring out the duration and intensity. If you’re talking about housework or gardening, it’s better to split up the task and spread it over more than one day, rather than trying to finish it all in one day. For a sporting activity, choose a suitable duration and intensity if it’s your first outing, and progress gradually. This will allow your muscles and joints to rest and adapt.

If you need advice or an adapted exercise program, or if you still have musculoskeletal pain or limitations, a physiotherapist is the professional of choice for advice and treatment. We look forward to hearing from you.
